100 Days Narrative of the Dean of the Faculty Of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia

SERDANG, 5th June 2024 – Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab. Kadir focused on the Strategic Planning initiative based on the True-North concept during the 100-Day Narrative of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The initiatives shared are output-based results formed and targeted at the end of March 2024, right after he formed a new management line-up following his appointment as Dean on 1st February 2024. Over 50 initiatives were developed under the True-North Strategic Objectives of the Faculty of Engineering in line with UPM's Strategic Direction Framework, which outlines six (6) Main Pillars and five (5) Core Foundations.

The essence of his 100-Day Narrative should be examined, observed, and implemented collectively by all members of the Faculty of Engineering to ensure the excellence and visibility of the Faculty of Engineering are enhanced both internationally and nationally. Besides sharing the faculty's achievements and initiatives, Prof. Zainal also shared leadership principles; trusted governance; weaknesses, threats, and challenges transformed into opportunities, potential, and strengths while administering the faculty. He further clarified that leadership is not solely based on power but focuses on responsibility.

The 100-Day Narrative Program of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering was also graced by the presence of UPM's Vice-Chancellor, Dato' Prof. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, along with the university's committee members, industry representatives, and students. The UPM Vice-Chancellor also delivered the Engineering Narrative in conjunction with the event, indirectly serving as a mandate and directive to all faculty members regarding the importance of Engineering DNA in relation to agriculture and national food security. All parties at UPM need to pool their expertise and energy to ensure the country's food system is strengthened to be more sustainable in preparation for tackling the current global food crisis threat.

In conjunction with the first 100 days of the new Dean's administration, the Faculty of Engineering launched one of the initiatives under the True-North of the Faculty of Engineering, GradConnect @Eng, officiated by YBhg. Prof. Dr. Ismi Arif Bin Ismail, UPM's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International). Prof. Ismi also officiated the reception of 10 e-Bikes from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to UPM, to be utilized for various EV-related purposes within the faculty and UPM.

GradConnect @Eng is an initiative by the Office of the Deputy Dean (Postgraduate & International) aimed at empowering postgraduate students in academic, professional, and personal aspects. This program involves various activities such as seminars, workshops, conferences, networking, and social events to enhance student experience and build a strong network with fellow students, faculty members, and external entities, especially industry players. Students will also be supported with various resources such as research facilities, academic advising, and career services.

Meanwhile, the Customs-UPM e-Bike Project is seen to benefit the university by strengthening e-mobility, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). Additionally, these e-Bikes have the potential to be used for teaching and research purposes at UPM, such as the development of e-journey applications and real-time asset management, which could further enhance the functionality and capabilities of the e-Bikes. Although this initiative may seem small, it has a significant impact on green energy, as it is expected to support the country’s efforts in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, moving towards net zero emissions within the targeted timeframe. Such initiatives by the Faculty of Engineering are expected to provide continuous benefits to the educational institution and the wider community through the empowerment of environmental preservation and management.
