UPM Researchers Win International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) 2020 Awards

SERDANG - UPM researcher Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Thariq Haji Hameed Sultan and his co-researchers won two Gold Medals and four Special Awards in the 5th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, iCAN 2020 that was held online on 29th August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The research team consisting of Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Thariq Haji Hameed Sultan, Prof. Dr. Yusri Yusof, Muhammad Imran Najeeb, Dr. Ahmad Hamdan Ariffin, and Dr. Adi Azriff Basri was declared as one of the winners of the International Special Awards presented by Manila Young Inventors Association (MYIA) for their invention titled 'Innovative Pineapple Leaves Fiber Extraction Blade for Fiber Extraction Machine.' The similar invention also won another Canadian Special Awards presented by the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS).

Besides that, another research team led by Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamed Thariq also managed to grab two more awards; Canadian Special Awards presented by the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS) and Jury’s Choice Awards, Selection by the Jury/ Evaluation Committee of iCAN 2020 for the invention titled 'PUTRA UAV: Novel Bio-Degradable Natural Fiber Composite Material for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Mainframe.' Co-Researchers of this project comprising of Dr. Adi Azriff Basri, William Robert Alvisse, Dr. Syeed SaifulAzry Osman Al Edrus, and Mohd Edyazuan Azni.

Other researchers from UPM who participated and won iCAN awards are Prof. Dr. Hamidah Ibrahim, Mr. Kwok Siang Kwee, Dr. Ali Amer Alwan, Dr. Nurul Husna Mohd Saad, and Dr. Teo Poh Kuang who won the Canadian Special Awards presented by Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS) for their invention titled 'Smart Travel Package Recommendation System with Preference Evaluation Techniques (EasyTravel)', Prof. Dr. Mohd Zobir Hussein, Farhatun Najat Maluin, Dr. Idris Abu Seman, and Prof. Dr. Sharida Fakurazi for invention titled 'NANODERMA: A Potent Antifungal Nanodelivery System for Ganoderma Disease Treatment for Oil Palm', Prof. Dr Vijayaletchumy Subramaniam and Kavenia Kunasegran for the invention titled 'A Basic Guide & Dyslexia Symptoms Intervention', and Sharifah Nur Munirah Syed Hasan, Faradiella Mohd Kusin, Verma Loretta M. Molahid, Noor Allesya Alis Ramli and Ikhwannudin Iskandar for invention titled 'Development of Green Building Material as Permanent Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) Product.'

International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) is an annual event organised by the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS). The year 2020 marks the 5th annual edition as well as the 5th Anniversary of iCAN. The award function of iCAN aims to acknowledge and provide opportunities for researchers and inventors to display and promote their inventions and compete for invention awards in Canada. It also tries to cultivate a positive outlook and encourages innovators from Canada and worldwide to actively engage and take the opportunity to display their creativity through the given platform. This year, iCAN was participated by inventors from 60 countries who presented their inventions through video presentations. All the winners will receive an awards package that will be sent through international airmail.
