8 Dec - Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir, a lecturer from Faculty of Engineering Universiti Putra Malaysia had been awarded with Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) 2014.
He received his certificate during the award giving ceremony presented by Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia. Also present were the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak with his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali, President of Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
Prof. Zainal is currently the Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation at the Faculty of Engineering and was a former Head for Centre for Electromagnetic and Lightning Protection (CELP) at the same faculty.
In this event held at JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur he was recognized as a Top Research Scientists Malaysia and leading expert in high voltage engineering, lightning protection and electromagnetic compatibility.
“It is an honor to be in the elite group of the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) whereby this elite group would serve as a gateway for the international scientific community, in particular academia, industries and international STI organisations that wish to seek top-notch STI expertise in Malaysia”, he said.
There was a total of 34 scientists announced as the 2014 Top Research Scientists Malaysia and only three recipients were from UPM including Prof. Zainal. The other two were Prof Dr Abdul Rahman Omar, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Prof Dr Jinap Selamat, Faculty of Food Science and Technology.
The Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) is an Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) initiative in line with its focus on fostering a culture of excellence in science, technology and innovation (STI). The initiative aims to identify and recognize the leading research scientists in Malaysia. The output of this initiative is a TRSM profile that would provide a centralized point of reference on leading scientists in Malaysia along with information on their research areas. The convention of the best minds in the country would create a hub for knowledge dissemination that can spur the growth of STI in Malaysia.
