SERDANG, September 1– A total of 3882 new local students of Bachelor’s programmes in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will enrol in UPM Serdang Campus and UPM Bintulu Campus for the academic session of 2019/2020, made up of 1190 male students and 2692 female students.
The total number of new students shows an increase of 255 people or 6.5% compared to last year with 2627 enrolments comprising 1067 male students and 2560 female students.
The vice-chancellor of UPM, Prof Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr. Aini Ideris, said that new UPM students will enrol in 83 programmes offered in 16 faculties.
She mentioned that the registration session involves five zones in UPM Serdang Campus and one zone in UPM Bintulu Sarawak Campus. The registration counters will open at 8.30 a.m. and ends at 4.30 p.m. in all zones.
“A total of 490 international students will also enrol in Bachelor’s programmes. The total number of international students shows an increase of 14 people compared to last year with 476 students.
“A new student registration method using web-based e-registration system is developed to ensure the registration process is done systematically. The e-registration system is one of the first systems used in public universities last year,” she said during the press conference here.
A total of 120 students will enrol in UPM Bintulu Campus.
Three duplicate programmes in UPMKB will be offered this semester – Bachelor of Forestry Science, Bachelor of Agriculture (Aquaculture) and Bachelor of Science (Human Development and Management), totalling in four Bachelor’s programmes in UPMKB.
Prof. Aini said that 11 people with disabilities and 6 indigenous people will enrol in Bachelor’s programmes in UPM.
UPM will also enrol 90 athletes, some of whom are future representatives of Malaysia in the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.
The new UPM student-athletes for the academic session of 2019/2020 who will represent Malaysia in SEA Games 2019 in the Philippines in November are Muhammad Abdul Azim Othman (Artistic Gymnastics), Karishma Loganathan (Netball), Navin A/L Arikrisnasamy (Taekwondo), Jabriella Teo Samuel (Weightlifting), Marceeta Marlyne Marcus (Weightlifting) Nur Afisa Abdul Halil (Recurve Archery), Andre Anura Anuar (Athletics) dan Muhammad Zulfiqar Ismail (Athletics).
There are also 81 students who enrol via the B40 Special Admission Track. The special track is offered to students from low-income backgrounds.
“Each new student will take part in an orientation programme – Minggu Perkasa Putra (Orientation Week) for a week in UPM. Different activities in the programme will guide the students to be skilful and have added value and strong soft skills to compete in the future,” she said. - UPM
