DiCLaaS bags another gold at the Defence Security & Sustainability 2022 Exhibition

Digital Cell Library as a Service (DiCLaaS) for System-on-Chip (SoC) Design, an invention co-invented by Dr. Lim Yang Wei from the Department of Computer and Communication Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. UPM won Gold Medal under the category of Industrial Revolution 4.0 at the Defence, Security & Sustainability Exhibition (DSS) 2022 held by Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) on the 3rd and 4th of August 2022. This invention has previously won Gold Medal, and Special Award at Engineering, Innovation and Exhibition (EIE) organized by the Faculty of Engineering, UPM in 2019.

DiCLaaS provides multiple ultra-low voltage digital standard cell libraries (i.e., digital logic gates collection) to design microchips, enabling energy-efficient electronics towards batteryless devices such as IoT and wearables for biomedical, agricultural, defense and security, and consumer applications. In addition, DiCLaaS also provides an AI-powered recommendation tool that helps engineers to reduce time to design microchips and fasten products’ roll out to the market. Using this invention, the team has successfully designed an 8-bit microcontroller chip fabricated in a 110nm CMOS process. The fabricated chip successfully operates at 35MHz frequency with a very low voltage (0.6V), prolonging battery lifetime by 2X and reducing electricity consumption by 10X.

Dr. Lim Yang Wei, co-founder of the startup FYT Digital, and his co-founders, Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani and Tarmezee Talib are in the process of commercializing this invention with the help of UPM Putra Science Park, under the Innohub market validation development and incubator program.
