22 June 2024 — A team from the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (KBP) at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully launched the AquaLestari Program, a Service-Learning Malaysia (SULAM) initiative, at Pangsapuri Taman Sri Serdang, Selangor.

This workshop introduced community members to an innovative aquaponics system integrated with a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). Led by final-year students Ammar, Zulfaiz, Asyraf, Zakwan, Ainnur, Nor Ain, and Naa’ilah, the program highlighted sustainable practices crucial for maintaining the long-term health of both aquatic and plant systems.

Participants were educated on the AquaLestari concept, which prioritizes efficient resource use and environmental management while significantly reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers. This approach not only fosters ecological sustainability but also enables the community to cultivate crops and fish with minimal water usage. Moreover, the program aims to boost income generation through diversified agricultural practices, empowering community members to benefit from both crop production and fish farming.

The initiative was funded by the KBP Department and received generous support from sponsors such as the MPP MBSJ Zon 20, Now Asia International Sdn. Bhd., Suria Catering Enterprise, MyFund Action, Greenovation Heights, Aquasencetech, Aqua Idaman, Aaishah binti Abd Ga’far, and the JMB of Pangsapuri Taman Sri Serdang. The AquaLestari Program marks a significant step in equipping the local community with sustainable agricultural practices that promise ecological integrity and economic empowerment.
