SERDANG – Five Final Year students of Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have won a special Best Architectural Design award in a Structural Earthquake Stability 3.0 contest - at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Campus in Sungai Long on last February 18.
The team of students comprising Mohammad Fikrie, Muhammad Najmi, Mohammad Muzakkir, Nur Rabiatul Adawiyah and Nurul ‘Ain walked away with RM400 cash, a participation certificate and an appreciation certificate.
This is the second time that students of UPM Civil Engineering Department took part in the contest. They were guided by the department’s lecturers - Dr. Izian Abd Karim and Dr. Nabilah Abu Bakar.
The contest organized by UTAR, Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is the third to have been held, aimed at encouraging students to put into practice their engineering knowledge-based experiences and studies on earthquake incidents. In the contest, the team worked closely together to design and build a small-scale structure model yet effective building to cushion the effects of earthquake.
A total of 24 teams from both private and local institutions all over the country took part in the contest.
Dr. Izian said UPM students’ involvement in the contest provided a platform for them to put into practice the theories that they have learned in classroom and served as a channel to encourage the use of innovative and creative approaches in engineering knowledge in the designing of effective and workable anti-earthquake structures.
She expressed her hope that that their success will motivate other students to be more progressive in tandem with the mission of UPM Civil Engineering Department to remain committed in producing innovative, creative and competitive graduates. - UPM
