Serdang, 24 May- Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Sapuan Salit from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia received the UPM Employee Figure Award 2021 (Academic) in conjunction with the 2022 Majlis Gemilang Putra. As a UPM employee figure, the following is his background and undeniable achievement to be awarded as the UPM Employee Figure 2021.

Professor Mohd Sapuan Salit was born in Kampung Sungai Nibong, Kota Setia, Teluk Intan, Perak on 25 September 1965. Professor Mohd Sapuan Salit has received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai, Besar, Kota Setia, Teluk Intan, Perak, Sekolah Menengah Horley Methodist, Teluk Intan, Perak and Sekolah Menengah Teknik, Persiaran Brash, Ipoh, Perak. After achieving excellent results at SPM level, he was offered a scholarship to pursue his studies in Australia in 1984 at Brighton High School, Victoria for HSC certificate and at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales and was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) degree in 1990. He studied a master of science in engineering design at Loughborough University, Leicestershire, United Kingdom in 1994. He was conferred a Doctor of Philosophy in materials engineering from De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom in 1998.

Professor Mohd Sapuan was offered a tutoring position at the Department of Mechanical and Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1994. After obtaining his PhD degree, he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UPM in 1998. He was appointed as a lecturer by co-appointed at the Centre for Advanced Materials Research, at the Institute of Advanced Technology (ITMA), UPM in 1999 as one of the founders of ITMA and was appointed head of the centre in 2001. In 2002, he was promoted to the post of associate professor, and the post of professor of grade C in 2007. Professor Mohd Sapuan was appointed Head, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering for three years (2008-2011). In 2011, he was promoted to the position of Grade B professor, and in 2019, was promoted to Grade A professor. Professor Mohd Sapuan was also the founding head of the Engineering Composite Research Group, Faculty of Engineering, UPM (2009-2018). In addition, he was the Head, Technology Biocomposite Laboratory, Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), UPM from 2014 to 2017 and from 2020 to 2022. Professor Mohd Sapuan was the founding head of the Centre for Advanced Engineering and Composite Materials Research, Faculty of Engineering, UPM from 2018 to today.

His field of research is composite materials, biocomposite materials, engineering design, design for manufacturing, simultaneous design, design for sustainability, machination of biocomposite materials, and material selection. He is a professional engineer, Board of Engineers Malaysia, Fellow, Society of Automotive Engineers International USA, Fellow, Academy of Sciences Malaysia, Fellow, Plastic and Rubber and Institute Malaysia, Fellow, Malaysian Scientific Association Fellow, International Biographical Association and Fellow of the Institute of Materials Malaysia. He is an Honorary Member and Former Vice President of the Asian Polymer Association and an Honorary Member and Founding Manager of the Malaysian Enau Development and Industry Association (PPIEM). Professor Mohd Sapuan is the Editor-in-Chief of the newly launched journal under PPIEM, the Journal of Natural Fibre Polymer Composites, co-editor-in-Chief of the journal Functional Composites and Structures, and a member of the editorial board of more than 24 journals.

To date, he has published more than 2000 publications including 870 journal papers, 55 books and 170 chapters in books. Professor Mohd Sapuan has presented over 50 plenary lectures and keynote speeches at conferences, and over 150 invited seminars. He was invited to be the editor of special issues for 32 journals, presented over 500 papers at conferences and seminars, evaluated over 1,300 journal papers and possessed eight patents. He has successfully supervised 92 PhD students and 70 Masters students as well as 15 postdoctoral researchers. His latest H-index is 95 with a total of 33,322 citations in Google Scholar and h-index 73 with a total of 20739 citations in Scopus.

He is the recipient of the Anugerah Karyawan Putra Cemerlang, UPM, as well as nine other outstanding researcher awards at UPM level. He is also the recipient of the ISESCO Science Award, Azerbaijan, Plastics and Rubber Institute Malaysia Fellowship Award, First Winner of publication Award, Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Khwarizimi International Award award, recipient of SEARCA Regional Professorial Chair, Kuala Lumpur Royal Rotary Gold Medal Research Award, two National Book Awards, Endeavour Research Promotion Award from TMU/IEEE India, Citation of Excellence Award, Emerald, UK, Malaysia's Research Star Award, Elsevier/Ministry of Education Malaysia, Publons Peer Review Award, Publons, USA, Professor of Eminence award,  Aligarh Muslim University, India, Top Research Scientists' Malaysia award, Academy of Science Malaysia, Gold Medal in Invention and Innovation Awards, Malaysia Technology Expo and PIONEER Publishing Award, PIONEER, Malaysia. His name is listed among the World Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University, USA. He is the finalist of the IET Achievement Award, UK and SAE Subir Chowdhury Medal of Quality Leadership, USA.
