Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has once again etched its name in the annals of sustainability innovation, clinching the 1st Runner-up title in the On Grid - Self-Consumption category at the prestigious ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA 2025). The accolade was presented during the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and the 25th ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25), held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on 16 October 2025.
At the heart of this achievement is UPM’s groundbreaking initiative titled “Advancing Renewable Energy and Sustainability through SURIA 16: A Megascale Rooftop Solar PV Project at Universiti Putra Malaysia.” Known simply as SURIA 16, the project integrates a Large Scale Hydroponic-Aquavoltaic System (IHAS), featuring a Floating Solar & Walkway installation developed by the Faculty of Engineering.
This visionary project has already garnered two major accolades at the National Energy Awards (NEA 2025) and earned a place in The Malaysia Book of Records (MBoR) late last year, underscoring UPM’s unwavering commitment to sustainable energy practices and planetary well-being.

Led by the SURIA Committee under the stewardship of Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, SURIA 16 stands as a beacon of green innovation in Malaysia. Its impact extends beyond environmental stewardship, serving as a dynamic educational platform for future engineers and sustainability leaders.
The Faculty of Engineering hopes this ASEAN-level recognition will further elevate UPM’s reputation as a national leader in energy transition initiatives. Congratulations to the entire UPM community for championing the university’s vision of pioneering green and sustainable innovation across the region.
