SERDANG, Sept 7 – Six undergraduates of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have been picked to represent Malaysia at Student Formula Japan 2016 car racing competition where they have to compete with 93 other teams from all over the world from Sept 3 to 12, 2016 at Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
UPM Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azmi Dato’ Yahya said the university was selected as the sole representative from Malaysia by Student Formula Japan 2016 based on merits and its experience in being involved in such competition at the national level.
“The students’ car will be competing against 93 other vehicles for the main categories - International Combustion Engine (ICV) Class and 13 Electrical Vehicle (EV) Class.
“Among the criteria of assessment for the competition are fabrication cost, design, dynamic and static driving, presentation by students, safety of car and other racing aspects, he said.
Meanwhile, Project Leader, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Khairol Anuar Mohd Ariffin said this was the first time that UPM had sent its representatives to the competition, comprising students and lecturers from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering of the Engineering Faculty.
“Our hope is to win the design category, best presentation and also best time attack categories to make UPM and Malaysia proud.
“UPM team comprises Putra Motor Sport students who have initiated a project to participate in Student Formula Japan 2016 since February, 2015, and its driver has undergone an aptitude test,” he said.
The six students are Mohd Nizar Mohd. Naim and Muhammad Ikliluddin Ishak (both drivers); Cheng Mun Chun (Structural Engineer), Muhammad Adhar Bagus (Electrical Engineer), Ahmad Iffan Zailani (Engine Engineer) and Muhammad Naim Ahmad (Manager).
He also said UPM’s objectives of competing in the racing event was to enable it to produce students who were capable of applying all theories that they had learned for the benefit of the industry, expose students to careers in mechanical engineering and automotive and to enable them to study the area of vehicle production in UPM.
