Smart Farming Technology Research Centre (SFTRC), UPM, has been involved in researches on the farming management concept using modern technology to increase the quantity and quality of agricultural products. The research centre addresses a wide spectrum of topics in recent agricultural engineering and technologies development including appropriate mechanisation; agricultural automation; smart cultivation practices; green and zero waste technology; GPS/GIS; remote sensing; soil scanning; agricultural informatics; and Internet of Things technologies. The centre had made significant contribution in this area including the establishment of an ICT centre called Smart Farming Community Centre in Tanjung Karang Selangor supported by the ICT section of the Ministry of Science & Innovation in 2005. At the centre, the researchers teach farmers in the community how to use computers and use ICT to manage their farm. They’ve created a custom website where the farmers can access fertility maps for their fields and track their activities throughout the growing season. Through this program, about 30 farmers in Tanjung Karang are enrolled in the centre’s precision program. And in the nine years since the project began, the area has upped production from 4 metric tons per hectare (the national average) to more than 6 metric tons per hectare. The group has published more than 568 articles in prestigious journals over the past ten years. It has successfully produced 539 postgraduates in smart farming studies. The group has conducted contract research worth millions of ringgit at national and international level particularly in agricultural engineering and precision agriculture researches.
To lead the charge in enhancing technological advancement in precision agriculture
To build innovative technological solutions and services in agriculture through advanced researches; development efforts; and technological diffusion in engineering and sciences
